Once part of the area’s thriving wool trade with over thirty worsted mills, Keighley now happily combines the old with the new. The Edwardian canopies of Cavendish Street rest easily with the modern Airedale Shopping Centre, whilst the town’s 19th century station hosts one of the leading preserved railways in the country. The KWVR attracts thousands of visitors a year, all keen to take a nostalgic trip by steam locomotive as it puffs its way up the Worth Valley. Its track was also used for the 1970s film, The Railway Children. And for real ale fans, what better than a pint of Timothy Taylors, Keighley’s independent brewery. Just five minutes drive from central Keighley, lies Cliffe Castle. This former Victorian mansion set in an attractive hillside park is a now a museum, specalising in natural history and geology. Visitors can see intriguing fossil remains, colourful mineral specimens and a working beehive of live honey bees. The museum also houses a collection of pottery, stained glass, fine furniture, bygones, dolls and toys. Or you might like to visit nearby East Riddlesden Hall, a 17th century manor house with oak framed barns. Once the home of a wealthy cloth manufacturer, the Hall is now cared for by the National Trust, who thankfully saved it from demolition in the 1930s. The house is set in mature grounds with beech trees, an orchard garden and a large duck pond. The interior houses fine examples of 17th century embroidery and is furnished with textiles, pewter and Yorkshire oak furniture.
