Set high up on a fort overlooking the River Calder, Sandal Castle near Wakefield is one of the most famous in Britain. It was close by here, during the War of the Roses, that Richard III died. The castle ruins now offer spectacular views across the Calder Valley. In Wakefield itself the museum traces the history of folk in and around Wakefield over the centuries. Of particular interest is the Victorian Wakefield exhibition exploring the different lives of the rich and poor in the town during this era.
